OPC Server for Lathe

E-mail Print PDF

DataZen's OPC Server for THINC Lathe demonstrates our continuing initiative as a Partner-in-THINC to develop solutions for the THINC community. This server allows the collection of data using the OPC DA standard from a remote THINC-based LU-45 Lathe control.

Remote Connection

The DataZen OPC Server utilizes the as-yet unreleased Event-Based THINC API (EBTAPI), provided by Okuma America Corporation. This API provides the ability to connect to a THINC-based control over the network using .NET remoting, with an optional encryption key for all network traffic.

Thus, the DataZen OPC Server pulls data from the control without the use of DCOM. All network traffic between the server and the THINC control is encrypted. At that point, the DataZen OPC Server begins collecting THINC data. Any interested OPC-compliant client application may then connect to the server to obtain the data.

Configuration

Configuration of the server is handled through an application provided with the server. This configuration utility provides a graphical user interface for configuring server parameters, such as timeouts, as well as machine connection information. This information may be configured at installation, or at any time after installation by running the OPC configuration utility.

Multiple Thinc Machines, One OPC Server

The DataZen OPC Server may connect to multiple machines, depending on licensing. The machines need only be network accessible, and running the Okuma EBTAPI Service. This allows for centralized collection of OPC data for efficiency reports or other purposes.

Because the DataZen OPC Server for Lathe utilizes the Okuma THINC API, it is capable of delivering any data accessible through the API, such as tool offsets, common variables, alarm histories, and machining reports. Actual data delivery may be tailored to the unique needs of each client; by default, DataZen provides access to basic OEE-related data.

 Direction

Future editions supporting Okuma machining centers are under consideration. DataZen can deliver a server with data items configured to each client's specific needs. For additional information or inquiries about development and ordering, contact DataZen.
